HistoryDocumented history
Thiruvathigai lies on the Gadilam river near Panruti. Its temple is one of the eight Veerattanams, the shrines where Shiva performed eight heroic deeds; this is where he destroyed Tripura, the three flying cities of the demons.
The temple is famous in the life of the saint Appar (Thirunavukkarasar). Born into a Shaiva family, he became a Jain monk; his sister Thilagavathiyar stayed at Thiruvathigai, praying for him. When he fell gravely ill with a stomach disease that the Jains could not cure, he came to her, prayed at this temple, and was healed, and he sang his first hymn here. By tradition he went on to convert the Pallava king Mahendravarman I, who had persecuted him, to Shaivism.
The temple's origins are in the Pallava period; it was enlarged by later Chola and other rulers.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple stands in a walled enclosure with a tall gopuram on the east. The sanctum holds a sixteen-sided linga, and the goddess Thiripurasundari has her own shrine.
Halls of the Nayak period and shrines of Appar and Thilagavathiyar stand within the enclosure; the Tripura Samhara image of Shiva with his bow is a highlight among the bronzes.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The three demon brothers of Tripura had cities of gold, silver and iron that flew through the sky and could be destroyed only by one arrow when they lined up. Shiva destroyed them with a smile, from his chariot made of the earth, with the sun and moon as wheels.

Appar's sister Thilagavathiyar is honoured with a shrine; devotees tell how she swept the temple daily while praying for her brother's return.
