HistoryDocumented history
Thirumananjeri lies in the Kaveri delta near Kuthalam, about 6 km from Mayiladuthurai. Its name is taken to mean 'the place of the sacred wedding', and the temple is the best known in Tamil Nadu for prayers for marriage. Appar and Sambandar sang of it, so it is counted among the 276 Paadal Petra Sthalams.
The temple has the form of the Chola temples of the delta, enlarged in later centuries. A separate shrine holds Shiva as Kalyanasundarar, the bridegroom, with Parvati, and it is to this shrine that unmarried men and women and their families bring garlands. The temple runs a large daily programme of marriage prayers, and many couples return after their wedding to give thanks.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is built in the Chola manner, with a gopuram, a walled enclosure and a stone sanctum for Shiva as a linga. The goddess Kokilambal has her own shrine facing south.
The Kalyanasundarar shrine holds bronze images of Shiva and Parvati in their wedding dress. A temple tank lies outside the walls.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Parvati, cursed to be born on earth, grew up in this region; Shiva came and married her here, with the gods as guests. Vishnu is said to have given the bride away, and Brahma conducted the rites.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
Couples who married after praying here often come back with their first child, so the temple is crowded with families as well as hopeful brides and grooms.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The divine wedding is a picture of the union of the soul with God, and marriage itself is treated as a sacred duty.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore
