A temple of Surya, the sun god, near Kumbakonam, built under the Chola king Kulottunga I. It is the chief of the nine Navagraha temples of the Kaveri delta and one of the very few temples in South India where Surya is the main deity.

Surya stands with his two consorts, and each of the other eight planets has its own shrine facing him. Pilgrims are expected to visit all nine Navagraha temples of the area, usually starting here. Surya faces west, which is unusual.
