The temple is one of the Pancharanga Kshetras. Its reclining image is large, and the shrine is close to the Kaveri bathing ghats of Mayiladuthurai.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The Moon (Indu) worshipped Vishnu here to be freed of his curse, giving the place the name Indalur. Vishnu also recovered the Vedas here from demons and returned them to Brahma; the image is said to carry their fragrance (parimalam).

Thirumangai Alvar arrived after the temple was closed and sang verses gently scolding the god until the doors opened.
