HistoryDocumented history
The town of Namakkal is built around a huge rock, about 60 m high, crowned with an 18th-century fort. At its western foot is the cave temple of Narasimha. Inscriptions name the Atiya (Satyaputra) king Gunasila as its maker, and the cave is usually dated to before about 784, though some writers place it as early as the 7th century. A second cave, of Ranganatha reclining on the serpent, is on the eastern side of the rock.
The cave walls are carved with fine panels of Vishnu's forms, including Narasimha tearing Hiranyakashipu, Vamana and Varaha. The goddess Namagiri has her own shrine; the mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, whose family deity she was, said that she gave him his formulas in dreams.
Opposite the cave stands a separate temple of Hanuman (Anjaneyar), with a standing image about 5.5 m (18 ft) high, in the open air with hands folded in worship towards Narasimha.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The Narasimha temple is a cave cut into the base of the rock, with a pillared front hall added later. In the sanctum, Narasimha sits with one leg folded, carved from the living rock. The side walls carry large reliefs of Narasimha killing Hiranyakashipu, Vamana, Varaha and other forms, among the finest early rock-cut sculptures in Tamil Nadu.
The Anjaneyar temple opposite has no roof over the sanctum: the tall stone image stands in the open, facing the cave.
Sthala PuranaTradition
After killing Hiranyakashipu, Narasimha was still furious; Lakshmi did penance on the rock to calm him. Hanuman, carrying a saligrama stone, is said to have set it down here; it grew into the great rock.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
The Anjaneyar image is kept without a roof, by custom, because the god is said to have refused one so that he could always see Narasimha.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Hanuman standing before Narasimha shows that true strength lies in service and humility.

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
