புண்டரீகாக்ஷன் பெருமாள் கோவில், திருவெள்ளறை

A hill temple on a white rock, believed to be older than Srirangam. It has two entrances used in alternate halves of the year, and a Pallava-era stepped well shaped like a swastika.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple stands on a rock of white stone, from which the village takes its name ('white rock'). It has early rock-cut caves and inscriptions, and a nearby stepped well in the shape of a swastika is dated by its inscription to about 800 CE. Two gateways, the Uttarayana and Dakshinayana, are opened in alternate halves of the year.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Vishnu appeared here to the king Sibi and to Garuda, Lakshmi and the earth goddess. Lakshmi is said to have wished to have precedence here, so the goddess is honoured first.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Tradition calls it 'Adi Vellarai', saying Ranganatha lived here before Srirangam.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Vishnu standing is the god ready to act: he waits at the door of the shrine to step out and meet anyone who calls on him.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The hill temple and its rare stepped well attract students of early Tamil architecture.
