HistoryDocumented history

Kallil, at Methala near Perumbavoor in Ernakulam district, is a cave shrine under a huge overhanging rock. It began as a Jain temple, probably around the 9th century, when Jainism was strong in central Kerala, and it still has images of Parshvanatha, Mahavira and the goddess Padmavati.

When the Jain communities of the area declined, the shrine came into Hindu worship and Padmavati came to be worshipped as Bhagavathy. The Jain images were kept in the cave, so the temple holds both traditions.

The temple is managed by the Kallil family, its hereditary owners. Visitors reach it by climbing about 120 steps through the forest.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The shrine is set under a natural rock overhang, with the images in the cave behind. A flight of about 120 stone steps climbs through the forest to it.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

Local tradition says the goddess appeared under the great rock, and that the rock itself shelters her like a roof that never falls.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A shrine shared by two traditions shows how sacred places in India change hands while keeping their holiness.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple is a heritage site for Kerala's Jain past and a living goddess shrine, with a festival in Vrischikam.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition and folklore
