Living templeKerala

A goddess temple near Kochi where the deity, a self-manifested laterite stone, is worshipped as Rajarajeswari together with Vishnu. A lower shrine, the Keezhkkavu, holds Bhadrakali in her fierce form, and many people with mental distress come here hoping for relief.

HistoryDocumented history

The goddess is a laterite formation known as the Rudraksha Shila, set on one pedestal with Vishnu, so the temple is also called Amme Narayana. Below the main shrine is the Keezhkkavu, where the fierce Bhadrakali receives the evening Guruthi Pooja, once held only on Fridays and now daily. The main festival is Makam Thozhal in Kumbham.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The site was once forest. A tribal chief, Kannappan, sacrificed a buffalo every Friday to Kali. His daughter Pavizham saved a calf from sacrifice and raised it. When she died, a priest told him that the calf was Vishnu and Lakshmi themselves, and the altar where he had sacrificed animals now shone with the divine presence. Kannappan gave up sacrifice and worshipped there.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The sage Vilwamangalam Swamiyar is said to have rediscovered the stone and recognised the goddess in it. Many stories tell of people freed from possession or madness at the Keezhkkavu, where nails driven into an old pala tree are said to mark spirits bound there.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A hunter turns from sacrifice to devotion through his daughter's compassion. The goddess appearing in three forms through the day expresses the idea of one Shakti behind knowledge, prosperity and power.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple's reputation as a place of healing for mental illness raises real questions about care. Many families now combine prayer here with medical treatment, and the temple has become a meeting point of faith and mental health awareness.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
