HistoryDocumented history

The Deul is a tall brick tower of the rekha type, standing alone among trees near the Ajay river. Its name comes from Ichhai Ghosh, a local chief who appears in the Dharmamangal poems of medieval Bengal as an enemy of the hero Lausen. Whether the temple is that old is doubtful; its style suggests the 17th or 18th century, and scholars have proposed other dates.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The temple is a tall brick rekha deul, with a curved tower rising in bands over a small sanctum. The brick surface carries some decoration, and the tower is unusually tall for its base.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

Ichhai Ghosh is said to have been a devotee of the goddess Shyamarupa and to have worshipped her here before his battles with Lausen.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A temple tied to the villain of an old poem shows that the losers of history also had their faith and their shrines.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Deul is a picnic and heritage spot for people from Durgapur, and a key monument in the study of Bengal's brick temples.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
