A Shiva temple near Madhubani said to stand at the hermitage of the sage Kapila, who is credited with installing its linga. It is one of the chief Shiva shrines of Mithila.
HistoryDocumented history
The place was once known as Kapil Ashram. The Darbhanga Raj, the former rulers of Mithila, supported the temple, and a large tank outside was dug with their help. Crowds gather on Mondays and through the month of Shravan.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Kapila, the sage of the Sankhya philosophy, is said to have lived and meditated here and to have installed the linga.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Kapila's Sankhya teaching separates the seer from what is seen; worship here joins that path of knowledge to devotion.
Meaning todayInterpretation
A large fair is held on Mahashivaratri, and the temple is a regular stop for kanwar pilgrims in Shravan.

Documented history
Tradition
Interpretation
Interpretation
