HistoryDocumented history

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
Kalidasa, then said to be a simple and unlettered man, was sent across the flooded river each night to light the temple lamp. One stormy night he had nothing to mark that he had come, so he smeared soot on the goddess's face. Pleased with his devotion, she is said to have blessed him with the gift of poetry.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Learning is pictured as a gift of grace, given to the humble as freely as to the clever.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Students come before examinations, and the story of Kalidasa keeps the temple at the heart of Mithila's pride in learning.
