A temple of Sita in Sitamarhi town, one of two places in the district that claim to be where Sita appeared from the earth. Its tank, Urvija Kund, is held by some to be the very spot.
HistoryDocumented history
Sitamarhi has two rival birthplaces of Sita: Janaki Sthan in town and Punaura Dham a few kilometres away. Each has its own tank, and each is supported by its own saints and scholars. The Vivah Panchami festival, the wedding of Rama and Sita, is celebrated here every year.
Sthala PuranaTradition
During a famine, King Janaka ploughed the earth to please the gods, and his plough struck a pot from which the infant Sita was born. Here the spot is identified with Urvija Kund, from 'urvi', the earth.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Sita, daughter of the earth, stands for patience and strength that come from the ground itself.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The two Sitamarhi sites together form the heart of the Sita circuit in Bihar, with large crowds at Vivah Panchami.
Documented history
Tradition
Interpretation
Interpretation
