HistoryDocumented history
Kadammanitta is a village about 5 km from Pathanamthitta town. Its Bhadrakali temple has long been the chief centre of Padayani, a night-long ritual of drumming, singing and masked dance offered to the goddess. The founding date of the temple is not recorded.
A Padayani village (Padayani Gramam) has been set up at Kadammanitta to preserve and teach the art. The village is also known as the home of the poet Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan, whose poetry drew on Padayani songs, and of the Padayani teacher Kadammanitta Vasudevan Pillai.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is a modest Kerala-style shrine with a sanctum under a sloping roof inside a walled enclosure. The open ground before it (the kalam) is where the Padayani is performed through the night by firelight.
Sthala PuranaTradition
After Bhadrakali killed the demon Darika, her rage could not be calmed. Shiva's attendants and the people danced before her wearing masks, and she laughed and grew calm. Padayani re-enacts this.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
Local tradition says the goddess came to Kadammanitta from Malayalappuzha, and the two temples are linked in worship.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The masks of Padayani, of Kali, Yakshi, Bhairavi and others, show that fear can be faced and turned to joy before the goddess.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Padayani is now taught to new generations and performed at cultural festivals, but its home remains the temple ground.

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
Medam (Apr-May)
