A Divya Desam on the Pamba river where Krishna is worshipped as Parthasarathy, Arjuna's charioteer, in a six-foot image said to be the tallest of Krishna in Kerala. It is the home of the Aranmula snake-boat race, the Vallasadya feast and the metal Aranmula mirror.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple has a two-storeyed gopuram, a round sanctum with a granite base and a conical roof, and murals from the early 18th century. It is one of five Krishna temples near Chengannur linked to the Pandavas. On Uthrattathi in the Onam season, snake boats from the river villages race here, followed by a grand temple feast, the Vallasadya. The golden attire for Ayyappa, the Thanka Anki, is kept here and carried to Sabarimala each Mandala season.

Sthala PuranaTradition

When the asuras Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas, Vishnu recovered them and taught Brahma the knowledge of creation at this spot. Later Arjuna, troubled by killing the unarmed Karna, built a temple to Krishna here as penance.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The image is said to have come downriver from Nilakkal on a raft of six bamboos, which gave the place its name: aru (six) and mula (bamboo). A devotee who once ferried food to the temple and was attacked on the way inspired the villagers to escort the offering in snake boats, the origin of the race.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Krishna as charioteer is the god who guides from beside you, not from above. The temple's link to Arjuna's remorse makes it a place of atonement as well as celebration.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Aranmula boat race and Vallasadya keep alive community crafts, from boat-building to the metal mirror, a geographical-indication product. The village has also been a focus of debates over protecting heritage paddy lands.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
