HistoryDocumented history

Ujjain, the ancient Avanti, was famous as a seat of learning. The Bhagavata Purana tells that Krishna and Balarama came here to study under the sage Sandipani, and that Sudama became their friend at the ashram. The site in the Ankpat area is honoured as that ashram.

The present buildings are modern. The area's name, Ankpat, is linked to the tradition that Krishna wiped his writing slate here, and stones with numbers are shown to visitors. The site is also a baithak (seat) of the Vaishnava teacher Vallabhacharya.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The ashram has a modern temple with images of the sage Sandipani and of Krishna, Balarama and Sudama as pupils. Beside it is the Gomti Kund, a stepped tank, and the Sarveshwar Mahadev shrine of Shiva.

The ashram is part of every pilgrim's round of Ujjain, with Mahakaleshwar, Mangalnath and the ghats of the Shipra.

इतिहासDocumented history

उज्जैन, प्राचीन अवंती, विद्या का प्रसिद्ध केंद्र था। भागवत पुराण बताता है कि कृष्ण और बलराम यहाँ ऋषि सांदीपनि से पढ़ने आए, और आश्रम में सुदामा उनके मित्र बने। अंकपात क्षेत्र का यह स्थल वही आश्रम माना जाता है।

वर्तमान इमारतें आधुनिक हैं। क्षेत्र का नाम अंकपात इस परंपरा से जुड़ा है कि कृष्ण ने यहाँ अपनी पट्टी साफ़ की, और दर्शकों को अंकों वाले पत्थर दिखाए जाते हैं। यह स्थल वैष्णव आचार्य वल्लभाचार्य की बैठक भी है।

आश्रम में एक आधुनिक मंदिर है, जिसमें ऋषि सांदीपनि और शिष्यों के रूप में कृष्ण, बलराम और सुदामा की मूर्तियाँ हैं। इसके पास सीढ़ीदार गोमती कुंड और शिव का सर्वेश्वर महादेव मंदिर है।
