One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, in the ancient city of Ujjain (Avantika). Its south-facing linga and pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti are unique. Destroyed by Iltutmish in 1234-35, it was rebuilt under Maratha rule in the 18th century, and the Mahakal Lok corridor opened in 2022.
HistoryDocumented history
Ujjain was a capital of Avanti and a centre of astronomy, its meridian once India's prime meridian. Kalidasa praised Mahakal in the Meghaduta. The temple has five levels, one of them underground: the Omkareshwar linga is enshrined above Mahakal, and the Nagchandreshwar shrine on the third storey opens only on Nag Panchami.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The Shiva Purana tells of the demon Dushan who attacked the devotees of Avanti. Shiva burst from the earth as Mahakal, 'lord of time and death', destroyed him, and remained as the Jyotirlinga at their request. Another story tells of King Chandrasena and a cowherd boy, Shrikhar, whose devotion called Shiva here.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The Bhasma Aarti, offered before dawn with sacred ash, is said to remind the world that all bodies end in ash. Mahakal is held to be the true king of Ujjain, so tradition says no ruler should spend a night in the city.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Mahakal is time itself, the destroyer of all, yet those who worship him are freed from fear of death. The south-facing linga faces the direction of Yama, death, and conquers it.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela every twelve years. The temple's link to time and astronomy connects faith with India's scientific heritage.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
