HistoryDocumented history
The Ratneshwar temple stands at the water's edge below Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi. It leans by about nine degrees, and its sanctum lies below the level of the ghat, so for much of the year it is under the Ganga and worship inside is possible only in the dry months.
Who built it and when is uncertain. Accounts name a servant of Raja Man Singh, a maid of Ahilyabai Holkar called Ratna Bai, or a royal family of Gwalior or Amethi. Most writers place it in the 19th century. Built on the soft river bank, it has sunk and tilted, and old photographs suggest the lean has grown over time.
Its tall, slender spire, standing at an angle beside the burning ghat, has become one of the most photographed sights of the Varanasi riverfront.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is a Nagara shrine with a tall, narrow spire and a small porch. Its base and sanctum sit below the ghat, on the river bed, which is why it fills with water and silt in the monsoon.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
One story says a man built the temple to repay his debt to his mother, and when he boasted that the debt was paid, the temple tilted: a mother's debt can never be repaid. This is why it is called Matri-rin Mahadev. Another story says Ahilyabai cursed the temple when her maid named it after herself.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The leaning temple is read as a lesson against pride: no gift can repay what a mother gives.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple is a symbol of the changing river: engineers and historians watch its lean, and boatmen show it to every visitor.
Festivals

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
