The temple of Kal Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva who is the 'kotwal' (police chief) of Kashi. Pilgrims visit him to seek permission to stay in the city, and receive a black thread for protection.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple is small and crowded, in a lane in the old city. Offerings include liquor and mustard oil, unusual for a Shaiva temple, and dogs, Bhairava's mount, are fed outside. Pilgrims believe that without Bhairava's leave they cannot stay in Kashi.
Sthala PuranaTradition
When Brahma's fifth head spoke arrogantly, Bhairava sprang from Shiva and cut it off. The skull stuck to his hand, and he wandered the world as a penitent until it fell at Kashi, at the Kapalmochan tirtha. He stayed to guard the city.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Bhairava is said to punish the sins of those who die in Kashi before Shiva gives them liberation, so devotees pray to him for mercy.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The fierce guardian shows that liberation is not cheap: even in the city of moksha, karma must be faced.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Kal Bhairav is part of every Kashi pilgrimage and is especially crowded on Sundays and Tuesdays.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
