Kashi Vishwanath Temple

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas, in the heart of Varanasi (Kashi), the city of Shiva. Earlier temples were destroyed in the 12th, 15th and 17th centuries; the present temple was built by Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in 1780 next to the Gyanvapi Mosque, which stands on the site of the temple demolished in 1669.

HistoryDocumented history

Kashi is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and Vishweshwar was its central shrine by the early medieval period. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times between the 12th and 17th centuries. The present compact temple of 1780, with its gold-plated spires, was built under Maratha patronage, and the 2021 corridor has transformed its surroundings.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana and the Shiva Purana describe Kashi as Avimukta, 'never forsaken', because Shiva never leaves it. The Jyotirlinga story tells of Shiva appearing as an endless pillar of light when Brahma and Vishnu argued over who was supreme.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Kashi is said to rest on Shiva's trident and so survives even the dissolution of the world. Tradition says that those who die in Kashi receive the Taraka mantra in their ear from Shiva himself and are freed from rebirth, which is why many come to Varanasi at the end of life.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Kashi means 'the luminous', the city of light where knowledge (jnana) liberates. It has been a centre of Vedanta and learning for millennia, from Adi Shankara to Kabir and Tulsidas. Its burning ghats make death visible, teaching detachment.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Kashi asks how a society relates to a painful past while keeping living worship going, and the database records both its destruction and its rebuilding as history. It remains a centre of Indian music, scholarship and ritual.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
