The goddess temple at Mir Ghat in Varanasi, near Kashi Vishwanath, regarded as the Shakti Peetha where Sati's earring fell. The present temple, with a small Dravidian gateway and Tamil inscriptions, was completed in 1893 by the Nattukottai Nagarathars of Tamil Nadu.
HistoryDocumented history
Vishalakshi stands a short walk from Kashi Vishwanath and Annapurna. The present building, completed in 1893, mixes a North Indian haveli plan with South Indian features, including a small gopuram and Tamil inscriptions, and has been cared for by Nagarathar merchants from Chettinad. The sanctum has two black stone images, the smaller Adi Vishalakshi and a taller one installed later.
Sthala PuranaTradition
When Sati gave up her life at her father Daksha's sacrifice, Shiva wandered the worlds carrying her body in grief, and Vishnu's discus cut it into pieces. Wherever a part fell, a Shakti Peetha arose. The Tantra Chudamani names Manikarnika at Varanasi with Vishalakshi as goddess, where a jewel from Sati's earring fell; some texts say her face or eyes. A few later lists count it as a subsidiary seat.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The goddess is also called Manikarni Devi, linked to the Manikarnika ghat where Shiva is said to whisper the liberating mantra into the ears of the dying.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Vishalakshi, the wide-eyed goddess, watches over the city of liberation. Her name suggests a gaze that takes in all beings without exclusion.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple's Tamil caretakers make it a living link between Kashi and Tamil Nadu, celebrated in recent Kashi-Tamil Sangamam events.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
