Dress and entry

Kerala temple custom applies: men usually remove shirts and wear a mundu or dhoti inside the enclosure, and women wear a sari or other traditional dress. Non-Hindus may not be allowed inside the inner enclosure.

How to reach

Nenmara is about 30 km from Palakkad town on the road to Nelliyampathy. Palakkad Junction is the nearest major railway station; Coimbatore and Kochi airports are about 85 km and 110 km away.

Best time to visit

October to March, and early April for the Vela.

The Vela day draws very large crowds; book transport ahead.

HistoryDocumented history

Nenmara (also spelled Nemmara) is a farming town in the east of Palakkad district, at the foot of the Nelliyampathy hills. The Nellikulangara Bhagavathy temple is shared by the two neighbouring villages of Nenmara and Vallanghy, which treat the goddess as their own.

No historical record of the temple's founding is known. It is famous for the Vela held after the harvest, which is counted among the largest temple festivals of the Palakkad region.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The temple is in the Kerala style, with a sanctum under a sloping roof inside a walled enclosure and an open ground in front, where the processions of the two villages meet during the Vela. Each village builds a tall decorated pavilion (pandal) for the festival.

Held on the 20th day of Meenam (early April), said to be the goddess's birthday. The two villages bring rival processions of caparisoned elephants and percussion, followed by large fireworks displays.

केरल के मंदिरों की परंपरा लागू है: पुरुष प्रायः कमीज़ उतारकर मुंडु या धोती पहनकर परिसर में जाते हैं, और महिलाएँ साड़ी या अन्य पारंपरिक वस्त्र पहनती हैं। गैर-हिंदुओं को भीतरी परिसर में जाने की अनुमति न हो, ऐसा संभव है।

नेन्मारा पालक्काड शहर से नेल्लियांपति मार्ग पर लगभग 30 किमी है। पालक्काड जंक्शन निकटतम बड़ा रेलवे स्टेशन है; कोयंबटूर और कोच्चि हवाई अड्डे लगभग 85 और 110 किमी हैं।

जाने का अच्छा समय

अक्टूबर से मार्च, और वेला के लिए अप्रैल का आरंभ।

भीड़

वेला के दिन बहुत भारी भीड़ होती है; परिवहन पहले से तय करें।

नेन्मारा (नेम्मारा भी लिखा जाता है) पालक्काड ज़िले के पूर्व में, नेल्लियांपति पहाड़ियों की तलहटी में एक कृषि नगर है। नेल्लिकुलंगरा भगवती मंदिर नेन्मारा और वल्लंगी, दो पड़ोसी गाँवों का साझा मंदिर है, जो देवी को अपनी मानते हैं।

मंदिर की स्थापना का कोई ऐतिहासिक अभिलेख ज्ञात नहीं है। यह फ़सल के बाद होने वाली वेला के लिए प्रसिद्ध है, जो पालक्काड क्षेत्र के सबसे बड़े मंदिर उत्सवों में गिनी जाती है।

ചരിത്രംDocumented history

പാലക്കാട് ജില്ലയുടെ കിഴക്ക്, നെല്ലിയാമ്പതി മലനിരകളുടെ അടിവാരത്തുള്ള കാർഷിക പട്ടണമാണ് നെന്മാറ (നെമ്മാറ). അയൽഗ്രാമങ്ങളായ നെന്മാറയും വല്ലങ്ങിയും പങ്കിടുന്ന ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് നെല്ലിക്കുളങ്ങര ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം; ഇരുഗ്രാമങ്ങളും ദേവിയെ തങ്ങളുടേതായി കാണുന്നു.

ക്ഷേത്രസ്ഥാപനത്തിന്റെ ചരിത്രരേഖയൊന്നും അറിവിലില്ല. പാലക്കാട് മേഖലയിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ക്ഷേത്രോത്സവങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നായി കണക്കാക്കുന്ന, വിളവെടുപ്പിനു ശേഷമുള്ള വേലയ്ക്കാണ് ക്ഷേത്രം പ്രസിദ്ധം.
