A walled temple complex of about nine acres on the hillock at the heart of Thrissur, with shrines to Shiva, Shankaranarayana and Rama. Its Shiva linga lies hidden under a mound of ghee built up over centuries of offerings, and the Thrissur Pooram is held around it. It is a protected national monument and won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific conservation award in 2015.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple stands on a raised hillock at the centre of Thrissur, enclosed by a stone wall with a gopuram on each side. Inside are three main shrines: Shiva facing west with Parvati behind him, a round two-storeyed shrine of Shankaranarayana, and a two-storeyed shrine of Rama. The Koothambalam hall is used for Koodiyattam and Nangyar Koothu. The temple was run for centuries by Nambudiri trustees, the Yogatiripads, until the Rajas of Cochin took control. Sakthan Thampuran, who made Thrissur his capital, began the Thrissur Pooram, in which neighbouring temples bring their deities to the temple grounds.
Sthala PuranaTradition
After Parashurama raised Kerala from the sea, he asked his guru Shiva to come and live in the new land. Shiva came with Parvati and stopped at this spot, then vanished, leaving a linga under a banyan tree. The place is therefore called Dakshina Kailasam, the Kailasa of the south.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
When the ruler of Cochin wanted to move the linga from under the tree, the Yogatiripad lay over it while the tree was cut, and not one branch fell on the deity. The ghee poured on the linga every day has formed a mound that never melts or smells, even in summer. Tradition also says Adi Shankara's parents, Shivaguru and Aryamba, prayed here for 41 days for a child.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The hidden linga, seen only as a mound of offered ghee, expresses the idea that the formless divine is known through devotion rather than through sight. Shankaranarayana beside it shows Shiva and Vishnu as one.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple anchors Thrissur's cultural life, from Thrissur Pooram to the Aanayoottu elephant feeding. Its award-winning restoration has become a model for conserving living Kerala temples with traditional craftsmen.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
