HistoryDocumented history
Kumaranallur is now part of Kottayam town, a few kilometres north of the centre. Its temple of the goddess, worshipped as Durga, is one of the oldest and most visited in Kottayam district, and the place name itself is explained by the temple's story.
The age of the temple is not documented. Local accounts claim great antiquity, and some writers say inscriptions point to an earlier Shiva shrine on the site; these claims have not been checked here. The temple is managed by its own devaswom, which also oversees a group of smaller temples nearby.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is in the Kerala style: a sanctum with a sloping roof, inside a walled enclosure (nalambalam), with a flagstaff, a large lamp-post and an outer courtyard. Rows of brass lamps along the walls are lit on Thrikkarthika night.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The goddess is identified with the Devi who is worshipped as the giver of every boon, and her worship here follows the Devi Mahatmya, in which Durga destroys the demon Mahishasura.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
By tradition, a shrine at this spot was being prepared for Kumara (Subrahmanya), but the goddess came and took the seat. A voice was heard saying 'Kumaran alla ur', 'this is not Kumara's place', and Subrahmanya was installed elsewhere; tradition names Udayanapuram. The village has been called Kumaranallur since. Another strand of the story links the goddess with the Meenakshi temple at Madurai.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The story of the goddess taking a seat meant for another god is told without rivalry: the place simply chose its deity.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Thrikkarthika at Kumaranallur draws large crowds from across Kottayam, and the lighting of lamps on that night is a well-known sight.

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
