An ancient Shiva temple, worshipped as Dakshinamurthy in the morning, Kiratamurthy at noon and Shakti Panchakshari in the evening, with Kerala's only oval sanctum. The roads around it were the scene of the Vaikom Satyagraha of 1924-25, a landmark struggle against untouchability.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple stands in about eight acres with four gopurams. Its sanctum is oval inside, circular outside and roofed in copper, and tradition credits it to the master carpenter Perumthachan. In 1924 activists began walking the forbidden roads around the temple, facing arrest for months. The campaign, backed nationally and visited by Gandhi in 1925, won partial access; full temple entry came with the Travancore proclamation of 1936.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The asura Khara won three lingas from Shiva and, before attaining liberation, entrusted them to the sage Vyaghrapada. Shiva and Parvati appeared to Vyaghrapada on Ashtami day in Vrischikam, which is celebrated as the Vaikathashtami. Parashurama later found the linga under water and consecrated it.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The temple was once owned by 108 Brahmin families. After a quarrel disrupted the worship, a voice ordered the west door closed, and it has remained shut. The temple is also known for its tradition of feeding all who come, believed to please Vaikkathappan.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Shiva as teacher at dawn, as hunter at noon and as one with Shakti at dusk: the day itself becomes a lesson in the many faces of one god. The Satyagraha added another lesson, that a god of all cannot be kept behind caste lines.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Vaikom is remembered across India as an early victory of nonviolent civil rights action. Its centenary in 2024-25 was marked jointly by Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition and folklore
