One of Kerala's major Shiva temples, rebuilt in 1542, with a copper-roofed sanctum and a celebrated mural of Shiva's Pradosha dance. It owns the Ezharaponnana, seven and a half gold-plated elephants shown to devotees once a year at midnight during the festival.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple stands within a fortified wall with a gopuram, and its roofs are sheathed in copper with fourteen finials. The walls at the main entrance carry Kerala murals; the Pradosha Nritham, showing Shiva dancing at twilight, is counted among the finest wall paintings in India. The ten-day festival in Kumbham ends with the Arattu on Thiruvathira.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The asura Khara received three lingas from Shiva after penance and carried them south. One stayed at Vaikom, one at Kaduthuruthy and one at Ettumanoor. Tradition holds that worshipping at all three before the noon puja is especially auspicious.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Soldiers carrying the golden elephants to Vaikom rested here and found a snake in every elephant. An astrologer declared that Ettumanoorappan wanted them, so they stayed. Tradition also says Adi Shankara composed the Soundarya Lahari while staying at the temple.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Shiva here is fierce yet generous. The Pradosha mural captures the moment when Shiva dances to restore order, a reminder that destruction and grace are one act.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple's murals and lamp-lit festival nights draw art historians as well as pilgrims. Thulabharam, where devotees are weighed against offerings, is still widely performed.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
