HistoryDocumented history
Amarkantak, on the Maikal hills where the Narmada rises, has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries. Behind the Narmada Udgam temple stands a group of older stone temples, protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and usually dated to the 11th century, when the Kalachuris of Tripuri ruled the region.
The largest, the Karna temple, is linked by tradition with the Kalachuri king Lakshmikarna (Karna), who ruled from about 1041 to 1073. The Pataleshwar temple, a smaller Shiva shrine, is named for its sunken sanctum, where the linga sits below the floor level. Other temples of the group include the Machhendranath and Keshava Narayan temples.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The Karna temple stands on a high platform and has three shrines, each with a curved tower, joined by a common hall. It is built of stone with restrained carving.
The Pataleshwar temple has a curved Nagara tower over a sanctum set below the level of the floor, reached by steps, with a pyramidal-roofed porch in front.
