HistoryDocumented history
Sohagpur, close to Shahdol, was within the kingdom of the Kalachuris of Tripuri. The Virateshwar temple, a tall stone Shiva temple, is usually dated to between 950 and 1050. Sources credit its building to Yuvarajadeva, but differ on whether this was the first or the second king of that name.
The Rewa State Gazetteer records a tradition linking Sohagpur with King Virata of the Mahabharata, which may lie behind the temple's name. The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and its annual fair is held in its courtyard.

The temple has a sanctum under a tall curved tower and a front hall. The tower and walls are covered with carving: deities, attendants, couples and decorative bands.
The tower leans slightly, which has drawn attention in recent years and is watched by the ASI.

Documented history
Documented history
