HistoryDocumented history

Warangal (Orugallu) became the Kakatiya capital in the late 12th century, and Ganapati Deva and his daughter Rudrama Devi built its great walls. At the centre stood a temple to Shiva as Swayambhu, entered through four huge stone gateways, one on each side.

After several campaigns, the Delhi Sultanate took Warangal in 1323 and the Kakatiya kingdom ended. The temple was pulled down. Its carved pillars, beams and sculptures now lie in rows on the site, while the four gateways still stand.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The four Kirti Toranas are free-standing gateways of grey granite, each about 10 m tall, with two pillars and a heavy lintel carved with swans, lotuses and garlands. They stood at the four sides of the temple courtyard.

The temple itself is gone, but its pillars, beams, ceiling panels and sculptures are laid out on the site as an open-air museum. The fort's circular walls, of earth and stone, still surround the area.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

Local tradition says the linga here appeared on its own (swayambhu), which is why the Kakatiyas built their main temple around it.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The ruined temple and the standing gateways speak of the strength of a kingdom and the loss of its centre.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Kakatiya gateway was chosen as part of Telangana's state emblem in 2014, and the site hosts a sound and light show on the Kakatiya story.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
