A star-shaped triple temple of the Kakatiya king Rudradeva, with shrines to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya and a richly carved pillared hall. Its connecting dance hall was dismantled for restoration in 2004 and rebuilt by 2022.
HistoryDocumented history
Rudradeva declared Kakatiya independence from the Kalyani Chalukyas and built this temple at his early capital, Hanamkonda. The name 'thousand pillars' refers to the many pillars, pilasters and posts of the halls. The temple stands on a raised platform and is linked by a hall to a giant Nandi.
Sthala PuranaTradition
No separate purana is recorded; the temple is a royal foundation.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
Local people say that no pillar blocks the view of the god from any other pillar, and that the black Nandi rings like metal when tapped.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Three gods under one roof, Shiva, Vishnu and Surya, show the Kakatiya effort to honour all major traditions of their kingdom.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Along with the UNESCO-listed Ramappa temple and Warangal fort, it is part of a Kakatiya heritage circuit, and the long restoration has been a test case for Indian conservation.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
