A Shiva temple on the summit of the Barabar hills, above the famous Mauryan rock-cut caves. In the month of Shravan thousands climb the hill to pour water on the linga.
HistoryDocumented history
The Barabar hills hold the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, made for the Ajivika ascetics under Ashoka and his grandson Dasharatha. The Shiva shrine on the highest peak is reached by a steep climb. In 2024 a stampede on the crowded path during Shravan led to calls for better crowd control.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
The hill is said to have been a place where siddhas, perfected yogis, practised, which gave the temple its name.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Shiva as the lord of the siddhas presides over a hill long sought by ascetics of many schools.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Pilgrims still climb every Monday of Shravan, and the caves below draw heritage visitors.
