HistoryDocumented history
The hill was known to early Buddhist pilgrims as Pragbodhi, the place 'before enlightenment'. One cave holds a gilded image of the starving Buddha; a smaller cave has a shrine of the goddess Dungeshwari. A Tibetan monastery stands at the foot of the hill.
Stories and local loreTradition and folklore
After years of fasting here, Siddhartha is said to have heard a musician tell his pupil that a string too slack will not play and one too tight will break, and so turned to the Middle Way.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The caves teach that neither indulgence nor self-torment leads to freedom.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The site is on the Buddhist pilgrim route around Bodh Gaya and is shared peacefully by Buddhist and Hindu worshippers.

Documented history
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
