HistoryDocumented history

The Radha Vallabh temple is the chief temple of the Radhavallabh sampradaya, founded by Hit Harivansh in the 16th century. He taught that Radha is supreme and that the highest devotion is to share, as a companion, in the love of Radha and Krishna.

The old temple was built of red sandstone in 1585 by Sundardas Bhatnagar, a disciple of Hit Harivansh's son. It is one of the finest early Mughal-period temples of Vrindavan. It was damaged during Aurangzeb's reign, when the image was taken to safety, and its upper storeys were lost.

In the 19th century a new temple was built beside the old one, and worship continues there. The temple's daily samaj, the singing of Hit Harivansh's Braj Bhasha poems, keeps an old music tradition alive.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The old temple is built of red sandstone with a ribbed vaulted hall, close to the Govind Dev temple in style. The newer temple beside it, where the image is now worshipped, is a simpler 19th-century building.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

Hit Harivansh is said to have received the image of Krishna from a Brahmin in a village on his way to Vrindavan, after Radha told the man in a dream to give it to him.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Radha's presence as a crown, without an image, shows her as the inner power of love that cannot be seen apart from Krishna.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple's daily singing (samaj) of Hit Harivansh's poems keeps an old Braj Bhasha music tradition alive.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
