HistoryDocumented history

Gopeshwar Mahadev is one of the most visited Shiva temples of Braj. According to Braj tradition, when Krishna danced the rasa with the gopis on the full moon of Sharad, Shiva wished to join, but only women could enter. He became a gopi, by Radha's advice or by bathing in the Yamuna, and Krishna recognised him and named him Gopeshwar, 'lord of the gopis'.

Little is recorded about the temple's building history, and the present structure is modern.

Its evening custom of dressing the linga in a sari and ornaments, as a gopi, is unusual in India. Vaishnava pilgrims visit Gopeshwar for his permission before entering the rasa places of Vrindavan.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The temple is a modest modern building near Vamshivat in Vrindavan, with the linga in a small sanctum.

Sthala PuranaTradition

When Krishna danced the rasa with the gopis on the full moon of Sharad, Shiva too wished to see it. Only women could enter, so at Radha's suggestion (or by bathing in the Yamuna) he became a gopi. Krishna recognised him and named him Gopeshwar.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Even the great god set aside his power and form to share in pure love; in Braj every soul is a gopi before Krishna.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Devotees of both Shiva and Krishna come here, and Vaishnava pilgrims visit Gopeshwar for permission before entering the rasa places of Vrindavan.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition

Interpretation

Interpretation
