HistoryDocumented history
The temple complex stands on a hill in Jabalpur, known as Madiyaji. By tradition it was founded by a poor woman (pisanhari) who ground flour for a living and saved enough from her work to build a temple. Her statue stands at the entrance, and the quern stones she is said to have used are kept there.
Two images in the old temple are dated to 1442. The hill now has several temples and a Jain school, and it is counted an Atishaya Kshetra, a place of miracles. Another tradition links the site with a Jain official of the Gond kings, and calls it Peshwa ki Madiya.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temples stand on the hilltop and its slopes, reached by steps. The old temple holds the images of 1442; later temples have white towers and halls.
