HistoryDocumented history
Nachna, in Panna district, is known for its Parvati temple of the Gupta period, one of the oldest surviving stone temples of India. Beside it stands the later Chaturmukh Mahadeva temple, usually dated to about the 9th century.
The temple is named after its four-faced linga (chaturmukha linga), in which a face of Shiva looks out in each direction. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and local people still worship in it.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple has a square sanctum under a curved Nagara tower, with a simple porch in front.
The four-faced linga in the sanctum is a fine piece of sculpture, each face with its own expression.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The four faces of the linga show Shiva looking out in every direction, present everywhere at once.

With the Parvati temple, it makes Nachna an important stop for students of early Indian temple architecture, between Panna and Khajuraho.
