HistoryDocumented history
Nandgaon, in Mathura district, is the village of Nanda, Krishna's foster-father. Braj tradition says Nanda's family moved here from Gokul to escape the demons sent by Kamsa. The temple on the hilltop has images of Nanda, Yashoda, Krishna, Balarama and Radha.
The present temple was built in the mid-18th century by Rup Singh, a Sinsinwar Jat chief, at a time when the Jat rulers of Bharatpur controlled much of Braj. Its high walls and bastions reflect those troubled times.
Nandgaon and Barsana, Radha's village about 8 km away, face each other across the plain, and the two villages share the Lathmar Holi each spring.

The hill is said to be Shiva himself, who asked to stand as a hill so that Krishna would play on him.
