HistoryDocumented history
The Katyayani Peeth in Vrindavan is counted among the Shakti Peethas as the place where Sati's hair is said to have fallen. The goddess is worshipped as Katyayani, whom, according to the Bhagavata Purana, the young gopis of Vraja worshipped for a month so that Krishna would be their husband.
What stood at the site before the 20th century is not well recorded. In 1923 the Bengali ascetic Swami Keshavananda built the present temple and installed the goddess.
Besides the goddess, the complex has shrines of Shiva, Lakshmi-Narayana, Surya and Ganesha, so that all five deities of Smarta worship are present.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is a 20th-century building in the Radha Bagh area of Vrindavan, with a main shrine of the goddess and separate shrines for the other four deities of the five.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The Bhagavata Purana tells how the young gopis of Vraja bathed in the Yamuna each morning in the month of Margashirsha and worshipped the goddess Katyayani, praying that Krishna would be their husband.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The gopis' vow shows devotion asking for nothing but the Lord himself.

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Interpretation
Interpretation

Ashvin (Sep-Oct)
Margashirsha (Nov-Dec)
