HistoryDocumented history
The Kardameshwar temple stands beside the Kardam Kund tank at Kandwa, on the southern edge of Varanasi. Almost every temple in Varanasi was rebuilt after the 17th century, after repeated destructions, so this modest stone shrine, usually dated to the 12th century, is valued as a rare survivor from before that time. It belongs to the period of the Gahadavala kings, who ruled from Kashi and Kannauj.
The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana tells how the sage Kardama, father of the sage Kapila, did penance here and worshipped Shiva, who appeared to him; the tank is said to have formed from Kardama's tears of joy.
The temple is the first night halt on the Panchakroshi parikrama, the five-day walk of about 80 km around the sacred zone of Kashi, and pilgrims still stop here on their way.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple is a small Nagara shrine with a curved spire over the sanctum and a porch in front. Its outer walls carry carved niches with images of gods, worn but still readable. It faces a large stepped tank.
Sthala PuranaTradition

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
