HistoryDocumented history

Kali Khoh is a cave temple of Kali in the wooded Vindhya hills near Vindhyachal, in Mirzapur district. It is one of the three shrines of the Trikona (triangle) parikrama: Vindhyavasini in the town, where the goddess is worshipped as Lakshmi, Kali Khoh as Kali, and Ashtabhuja on the hill as Saraswati.

The present shrine buildings are modern, but the cave has long been a place of goddess worship. Pilgrims usually make the Trikona parikrama in one day, starting at Vindhyavasini and going on to Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja.

British reports of the 19th century linked the Vindhyachal shrines with the Thugs, the gangs of highway robbers; these accounts are not reliable and the link is uncertain.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The shrine is a small cave (khoh) in the hillside, with a modern porch and steps in front. The image of Kali is unusual: her mouth is wide open and turned upwards.

Sthala PuranaTradition

In the Devi Mahatmya, Kali drinks the blood of the demon Raktabija so that no new demons can spring from his drops. The upturned open mouth of the image is said to show her catching his blood before it reaches the ground.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

Stories from the 19th century tell of the Thugs, who are said to have honoured the goddess of the Vindhyachal shrines; these accounts come from British reports and are not reliable.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The three shrines together show one goddess as wealth, power and wisdom.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The Navaratri fairs at Vindhyachal bring huge crowds, and the hill paths between the three shrines are busy with pilgrims and vendors.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
