A goddess temple on a wooded mound in Kanwar lake, a large oxbow wetland that became Bihar's first Ramsar site in 2020. The goddess Mangla is counted by local tradition as a Shakti Peetha, and Pala-period remains have been found at the site.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple stands on a raised mound, the 'garh', surrounded by the waters and marshes of Kanwar lake. Coins, sculptures and the remains of stupas found here suggest a sizeable settlement in the Pala period, and some remains may be older. The lake is a winter home for migratory birds.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Some lists of the Shakti Peethas place a seat of the goddess here, though this is not found in the older lists.
PhilosophyInterpretation
A shrine on an island of earth in a lake of water shows the goddess as the ground that holds all life.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple is part of a protected wetland, so pilgrimage here goes hand in hand with care for the birds and the lake.
Documented history
Tradition
Interpretation
Interpretation
