HistoryDocumented history

The Lakshmi Narayan temple, usually called the Birla Mandir, was built by the Birla industrial family, who have built temples in many Indian cities. It was completed in 1964 on the Arera Hills, south of Bhopal's Upper Lake, and is one of the highest points of the city.

The temple is dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi, with shrines of Shiva and Parvati and other deities. Beside it is a museum with sculptures collected from sites in the region.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The temple is a modern building in a Nagara style, with a tall tower over the sanctum and a hall, set in gardens on the hilltop. Its walls carry verses from the scriptures.

The museum beside the temple holds stone sculptures from the Raisen, Sehore, Mandsaur and Shahdol districts.

लक्ष्मी नारायण मंदिर, जिसे प्रायः बिड़ला मंदिर कहते हैं, बिड़ला औद्योगिक परिवार ने बनवाया, जिन्होंने भारत के कई शहरों में मंदिर बनवाए हैं। यह 1964 में भोपाल की बड़ी झील के दक्षिण में अरेरा पहाड़ियों पर पूरा हुआ, जो शहर के सबसे ऊँचे स्थानों में है।

मंदिर विष्णु और लक्ष्मी को समर्पित है, जिसमें शिव और पार्वती तथा अन्य देवताओं के मंदिर हैं। इसके पास क्षेत्र के स्थलों से एकत्र मूर्तियों का एक संग्रहालय है।

मंदिर नागर शैली की आधुनिक इमारत है, जिसमें गर्भगृह पर ऊँचा शिखर और मंडप है, और यह पहाड़ी की चोटी पर बाग़ों में स्थित है। इसकी दीवारों पर शास्त्रों के श्लोक हैं।

मंदिर के पास के संग्रहालय में रायसेन, सीहोर, मंदसौर और शहडोल ज़िलों की पत्थर की मूर्तियाँ हैं।
