HistoryDocumented history
Gyaraspur, in Vidisha district, has a group of early medieval monuments, among them the Maladevi temple and the Bajramath. The Bajramath was built in the 9th century as a temple with three shrines side by side. The Archaeological Survey of India records that the central shrine was dedicated to Surya, the southern to Vishnu and the northern to Shiva.
At a later date the temple was taken over by Digambara Jains, whose images now stand in all three sanctums. The temple is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The temple faces east and has three shrines in a row, each with its own curved tower, sharing a common front hall. The towers are of the Nagara type.
The doorways and walls carry carvings of the original Hindu deities alongside the Jain images installed later.

A temple of Hindu gods that became a Jain shrine shows how sacred buildings passed between traditions in medieval India.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The temple is studied as a rare triple-shrine temple and is visited with the Maladevi temple and the Hindola Torana at Gyaraspur.
