Great Stupa, Sanchi

Living templeASI Monument of National ImportanceUNESCO World Heritage Site (part of)

The oldest stone structure in India still standing, a great Buddhist stupa begun by the emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE. Its four carved gateways (toranas) are masterpieces of early Indian art. Sanchi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

HistoryDocumented history

The gateways tell the Buddha's life and earlier lives (Jatakas) without showing him in human form: he appears as a tree, a wheel, footprints or an empty seat. An inscription on one gateway says it was carved by ivory workers from Vidisha. Temple 17 nearby is one of the earliest Gupta temples.

Sthala PuranaTradition

No puranic story; Buddhist tradition says Ashoka's wife Devi came from Vidisha and that their son Mahinda left from here for Sri Lanka.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Relics of the Buddha's disciples Sariputta and Mahamoggallana, taken to London in the 19th century, were returned in 1952 and are kept in the Chetiyagiri Vihara.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The stupa is a map of the path to awakening, walked by circling it in meditation.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Sanchi is a pilgrimage site for Buddhists from Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and a centre of study for Buddhist art.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
