The ruins of a great Buddhist monastery and university founded by the Pala king Dharmapala, with a large cross-shaped brick stupa at its centre. It was one of the chief centres of Vajrayana learning and sent teachers such as Atisha to Tibet.
HistoryDocumented history
Vikramashila was a royal foundation of the Pala kings. Its square monastery had about 200 cells around a central cross-shaped stupa, rising in terraces with chapels on each side, a plan like that of Paharpur in Bangladesh. Its scholars wrote and translated many texts later preserved in Tibet.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The monastery joined strict study with tantric practice, teaching that wisdom and method must go together.
Meaning todayInterpretation
A central university named after Vikramashila has been planned nearby, and ongoing excavations keep adding to what is known.
Documented history
Interpretation
Interpretation
