HistoryDocumented history
The Varaha temple stands in the Western group at Khajuraho, facing the Lakshmana temple, and was built about 900-925, early in the great age of Chandela building. It is not a full temple but an open pavilion made to shelter a single great image.
The image is a monolithic boar, the Varaha avatar of Vishnu, who raised the earth from the cosmic ocean. Its body is covered with hundreds of small figures of gods and sages, showing the whole universe held within the god.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The pavilion stands on a high platform and has an open hall of fourteen plain pillars under a pyramidal roof of stepped tiers.
Inside is the monolithic Varaha, about 2.6 m long, polished smooth and carved over its whole body with rows of small deities. Beneath its feet is a serpent, and the figure of the earth goddess once clung to its tusk.
Sthala PuranaTradition
In the Puranas, the demon Hiranyaksha dragged the earth to the bottom of the cosmic ocean, and Vishnu took the form of a boar, dived into the waters, killed the demon and raised the earth on his tusks.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The boar covered with gods shows Vishnu as the one who holds the whole world within himself.

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Interpretation
Interpretation
