The earliest of the great Chandela temples of Khajuraho, dedicated to Vishnu as Vaikuntha and completed by 954. It is the best preserved of the western group, with all four corner shrines intact, and is part of the Khajuraho World Heritage Site.
HistoryDocumented history
The temple stands on a high terrace with a shrine at each corner. Its walls carry bands of gods, celestial women, warriors, processions and loving couples. A frieze on the base shows hunting, battle and daily life in the Chandela kingdom.

No sthala purana is recorded. The temple's inscription says the image came from Kailasa in Tibet and passed through the hands of several kings, including the Pratihara Devapala, before Yashovarman obtained it.
