HistoryDocumented history

Survaya, about 20 km east of Shivpuri, is a walled enclosure holding three Shiva temples and a Shaiva monastery (matha). The temples and monastery are usually dated to the 10th or 11th century, when the Kachchhapaghata dynasty ruled the region, and belonged to the Shaiva monastic orders that were strong in central India at the time.

The fort wall around them was built later. The Archaeological Survey of India dates it to the 16th-17th century, while other accounts place it earlier. The site has been conserved by the ASI.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The three temples are of the Kachchhapaghata style, with sanctums under curved towers and porches in front. The monastery is a two-storeyed stone building around a courtyard, built of large blocks with huge stone slabs for its roof.

The fort wall has a single approach through two gates on its western side.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A monastery beside its temples recalls that Shaiva worship was also a life of learning and discipline for its monks.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The site is a quiet stop on the road from Shivpuri to Jhansi, valued by historians as a rare medieval monastery.

Documented history

Documented history

Interpretation

Interpretation
