HistoryDocumented history
The Jain enclosure of the Eastern group at Khajuraho holds the Parshvanatha and Adinatha temples and a number of smaller shrines. The Shantinatha temple, unlike its neighbours, is a modern building, put up around a much older standing image of Shantinatha, the sixteenth tirthankara.
The image, about 4.5 m high, is usually dated to the 11th century; an inscription on it has been read as 1028. Older carvings from ruined temples are set into the walls of the enclosure. Unlike most of Khajuraho, the temple is in active worship by the Digambara Jain community.

The temple is a modern building with a large hall around the colossal standing image of Shantinatha. Around it, in the enclosure, are smaller shrines and older carvings reused in the walls.
