HistoryDocumented history

The Ghantai temple stands near the village of Khajuraho, among the Jain temples of the Eastern group. It was built in the late 10th century, when the Chandela kings ruled from Khajuraho and Jain merchants built temples beside the Hindu ones.

Only the porch and the hall survive; the sanctum and tower have fallen. The temple is named after the bell-and-chain (ghanta) motifs carved on its slender pillars. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India as part of the Khajuraho World Heritage Site.

ArchitectureDocumented history

What remains is an open pillared porch and hall on a raised base. The tall, slender pillars are carved with bells hanging from chains, the motif that gives the temple its name.

The doorway lintel shows the sixteen auspicious dreams of the mother of a tirthankara and a Jain goddess riding Garuda, which mark the temple as Jain.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The Jain temples of Khajuraho, standing beside Hindu ones of the same style and date, show two faiths sharing one court and one art.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The temple is part of the Khajuraho World Heritage Site and is visited with the Parshvanatha and Adinatha temples of the Eastern group.

Documented history

Documented history

Interpretation

Interpretation
