HistoryDocumented history

The Sarneshwar Mahadev temple stands at the foot of the Siranwa hills about 3 km west of Sirohi. It is the kuldev, the family deity, of the Deora Chauhans, who ruled the state of Sirohi from the 14th century until 1949.

The date of the first temple is not recorded; its plan and style are usually compared with Paramara-period temples of the 11th-12th centuries. Later rulers of Sirohi renovated and fortified it: Maharani Apurva Devi, wife of Maharao Lakha, is credited with a renovation and with installing the Hanuman image at the gate, and Maharao Akheyraj decorated it in the 17th century. The cenotaphs (chhatris) of the Sirohi rulers stand in the area, and a pond lies near the temple.

ArchitectureDocumented history

The temple is enclosed by high walls with bastions and gates, so that it looks like a small fort. Inside are the sanctum with a Nagara spire, pillared halls, a large Nandi and a Hanuman image at the gate.

Nearby are a pond and the chhatris of the Deora rulers of Sirohi.

Stories and local loreTradition and folklore

A tradition says the temple was defended against an invading army from Delhi, and the high walls are taken as a sign of that struggle.

Documented history

Documented history

Tradition and folklore
